A gunman opened fire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday night, wounding a law enforcement officer before being taken into custody, according to a law enforcement official. The officer was shot in the bullet-resistant vest but is expected to recover, several sources told The Associated Press. The suspect was identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, two law enforcement officials told the AP.

President Donald Trump described the suspect as a 'sick person' during a press conference. 'When you're impactful, they go after you. When you're not impactful, they leave you alone,' Trump said. He added that authorities 'seem to think he was a lone wolf.'

Video posted by Trump showed the suspect running past security barricades as Secret Service agents ran toward him, according to multiple reports. All officials protected by the Secret Service were evacuated, including Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The Secret Service and other authorities swarmed the room as guests ducked under tables, according to multiple reports.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said she had 'no reason' to believe anyone else was involved and that 'there does not appear to be any sort of danger to the public at this time.' Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said charges related to Saturday night's attack will be filed shortly, and that the suspect appeared to be targeting members of the Trump administration. FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency is examining a long gun and shell casings recovered from the scene.

It was the third time since 2024 that the president had been under threat by an attacker in his immediate vicinity, including the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, according to multiple reports. Guests were dining on a spring pea and burrata salad when noise began, according to multiple reports. Trump said he initially thought the noise was a tray dropping, but some journalists believed they heard five to eight gunshots.

President Donald Trump endorsed former Fox News host Steve Hilton for Governor of California, according to multiple reports. 'I have known and respected Steve Hilton... for many years. He is a truly fine man,' Trump said in a statement. 'People are fleeing, crime is increasing, and taxes are the highest of any state in the country, maybe the world.' Trump added, 'Steve Hilton has my COMPLETE & TOTAL ENDORSEMENT.'

California may have a Republican governor for the first time in nearly two decades after Arnold Schwarzenegger served until 2011, according to multiple reports. Hilton has edged ahead in the polls and Democrats are panicking that their crowded field may cause an all Republican showdown in November, according to multiple reports. Under California law, the primary system is a 'top-two' system. Republican candidates Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco top the long list of Democrats in the gubernatorial race. The other eight candidates are all Democrats: Xavier Becerra, Matt Mahan, Katie Porter, Tom Steyer, Eric Swalwell, Tony Thurmond, Antonio Villaraigosa, and Betty Yee. At its February convention, the California Democratic Party failed to unite behind a single candidate. Democrats make up 45.3% of registered voters, Republicans account for 25.2%, and independent voters comprise 22.3%.

President Donald Trump praised the Secret Service for acting quickly after the shooting incident, according to multiple reports. Trump said the event will be rescheduled.
