  • The Land and Environment Court will now dismiss the case without trial, allowing the prison construction to proceed.

The establishment of a prison in Ulriksfors, just outside Strömsund, is moving forward after a nearby resident withdrew their appeal against the municipality's building permit. According to SVT Jämtlandsnytt, the neighbor had appealed Strömsunds kommun's building permit for the planned prison at the end of December 2025. In their appeal, the neighbor expressed concerns about reduced safety in the area, increased traffic, and the risk of lowered property values when the property would change use from office to correctional facility.

The County Administrative Board decided in February to uphold the municipality's building permit decision, and that decision was in turn appealed to the Land and Environment Court at Östersund District Court. The neighbor has now withdrawn their appeal, which means the Land and Environment Court will dismiss the case without trying it.
