Gotland residents urged to cut water use amid shortage

EnvironmentEnvironment
Key Points
  • Residents in parts of Gotland must reduce water use due to a production shortfall.
  • Failure to cut consumption risks loss of water pressure or complete stoppage.
  • Ongoing maintenance and water quality work are limiting production capacity.

Residents and businesses connected to the municipal water network in Visby, Lummelunda, Brissund, Själsö, Väskinde, Vibble, Västerhejde, Tofta, and Västergarn on Gotland, Sweden, are being asked to reduce their drinking water consumption. Region Gotland issued a press release stating that more water is currently being used than is being produced. If consumption does not decrease, there is a risk that water pressure will drop or, in some cases, stop completely.

Work to improve drinking water quality and reduce levels of plankton organisms has been ongoing since winter, alongside planned and recurring maintenance, which is reducing the water plants' production capacity. Patrik Johansson, head of the drinking water unit at Region Gotland, said that if everyone helps save water, they can continue important measures like flushing work to lower plankton levels.
