Goteborg adopts 3-30-300 rule to boost city canopy
Key Points
  • Goteborg adopts 3-30-300 rule to increase tree canopy.
  • Current canopy is below 30% target; exact coverage unknown.
  • Planting efforts underway at multiple city squares, with diverse species.

In the municipal council's 2025 budget, the city environment committee was assigned to increase canopy coverage. The city has already begun planting: seven trees were planted at Östra Larmgatan in autumn 2024, and more were planted inside the Vallgraven moat in autumn 2025. Locations such as Kungstorget and Esperantoplatsen are becoming greener. The new trees include both deciduous and coniferous species, a mix of native and non-native varieties, which improves resistance to tree diseases. Species like Korstörne and Pagodträd are selected for warmer, drier urban conditions. Urban trees provide ecosystem services including oxygen production, carbon storage, noise reduction, cooling shade, water retention, and wildlife habitat. The total budget for these plantings has not been announced.

Planning for future plantings continues. In 2026, four trees including Kinaträd will be planted at Kaserntorget, while Lilla torget will receive ten trees and four bushes of species like Berlineral, Näsduksträd, Mammutträd, Kentuckykaffe, Svart valnöt, and Magnolia. Plant beds must be carefully designed with sufficient size, root barriers, and quality materials to protect utilities. In 2025, three Korstörne trees were planted at Södra Larmgatan and four trees—Falskt korkträd, Pekanträd, Kejsarträd, and Amerikansk bäralm—were planted at Esperantoplatsen. A maintenance plan for the new trees has not yet been announced.
