Stuart Imrie was 17st 10lb and battling weight-related health issues in April 2025. 9 after a referral to NHSGGC's Weight Management Service. Imrie is pain-free after a knee operation and has dropped six inches in his waist.
He is a former scientist who shared his story a year into his journey as part of World Obesity Day, which is today, highlighting the impact of excess weight on health and encouraging evidence-based support. Imrie's story shows what's possible through lifestyle changes and group support from the NHS without drastic measures or weight-loss medication. 'I didn't feel unhealthy but I knew I was overweight and I had a lot of medication for different conditions, including type two diabetes and knee pain,' Imrie said.
'My doctor said to me that losing some weight would be a good idea before my knee operation, and I took his advice. ' The Weight Management Service supports individuals who are overweight with specific health conditions that could improve through weight loss. Access to the service is through referral from a GP or health professional, with self-referral also possible.
Imrie was triaged to Community Weight Management, which provides a free 12-week membership with Slimming World or Weight Watchers. He praised his coach and group members for helping him in his journey. 'I was sceptical to begin with, but the whole experience was very supportive.
My coach, Helen, explained it all and there were no extreme measures or drastic changes, which is why I could stick with it,' Imrie said.
