According to multiple reports, a draft treaty sets out plans for a 'fluid border' between Gibraltar and Spain, implementing a 'shared prosperity zone' between Gibraltar and the EU. The Telegraph, as reported by HuffPost UK, claims that Spain will have the final say on whether UK travellers can enter Gibraltar. However, this claim is disputed; the document is complex and largely negotiated by the UK government, suggesting the interpretation may be misleading.
Fabian Picardo, Gibraltar's chief minister according to major media, is supportive of the new deal. In response to criticism, Picardo said on social media that Suella Braverman had it wrong, accusing her of playing politics and selectively quoting a complex document largely negotiated by the Conservative government when she was Home Secretary. Braverman, who defected to Reform in January according to major media, had claimed on social media that the UK had 'ceded control of Gibraltar to Spain' and that it is 'British in name only.'
Hi Suella Braverman. You have it wrong, starting with the title of my office. Please read all the text and the supporting documents and stop playing politics with the People of Gibraltar whose future YOU and your ilk put in great jeopardy with Brexit. Stop misleading with your selective quotation of a complex document largely negotiated by YOUR Conservative government when it was in office and YOU were Home Secretary.
Britain should rejoin the European Union.
