Gethin Jones leaves BBC Morning Live for Commonwealth Games
Key Points
  • Gethin Jones has temporarily left BBC Morning Live to serve as chef de mission for Team Wales at the Commonwealth Games.
  • He will also compete in Celebrity Apprentice, a charity series where celebrities vie for a £100,000 donation.
  • Jones has spoken about experiencing depression after his separation from Katherine Jenkins in 2011.

Jones has taken on the responsibility of chef de mission for Team Wales at the Commonwealth Games, where he will support athletes, represent Wales at official functions, and act as the team's official spokesperson. According to Daily Mirror - Main, Gethin Jones described the preparation as phenomenal, noting everything is geared toward athlete success. He recently participated in workshops, presentations, and seminars with fellow chefs de mission in Scotland ahead of the event. It remains unclear when exactly he will return to BBC Morning Live or what specific dates the Commonwealth Games are scheduled for.

In a separate venture, Jones has been announced as a candidate for the inaugural full-length series of Celebrity Apprentice, which features 12 celebrities competing across six episodes. The celebrities will tackle weekly business challenges for a chance to secure a £100,000 donation for a charity of their choice. Lord Sugar, the host, stated that the series will be entertaining but challenging, especially with the high stakes for charity. The show will relocate its iconic boardroom to a London City skyscraper for a new backdrop. Which charity Jones has chosen for the competition is not yet known.

The detail is just phenomenal. Everything is geared towards the athletes being in the best environment to succeed when they come here in the summer and every day, every hour there's something to consider.

Jones has also opened up about personal struggles, revealing that his separation from singer Katherine Jenkins in 2011 after a five-year relationship and engagement plunged him into depression. According to Daily Mirror - Main, Gethin Jones described it as an awful period where he had a bad bout of depression and sought therapy for a couple of years, continuing to work on his mental health. His current mental health status and how long he has been in therapy are not specified.

More recently, Jones celebrated his 48th birthday with a skiing getaway to Morzine earlier this year, accompanied by friend and Sky Sports presenter Pien Meulensteen. The exact nature of his relationship with Helen Skelton remains unknown.

I was engaged and then breaking up, afterward, or even during that period, it was just awful. I remember doing BBC Radio 5Live and going into the toilet at 5.30 am going, 'All right. Come on. Just focus for the next three hours, and then you can go back to being sad again.' I definitely had a bad bout of depression during that time. I was waiting for a friend to tell me what to do and they can't do that. It puts so much pressure on them... you need to figure it out yourself. I saw someone, I had therapy for a couple of years and I still do my homework on that.
