During the fifth stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico cycling race in Italy, German cyclist Georg Zimmermann reportedly received assistance from a team car. According to SVT Sport and Expressen Sport, Zimmermann took a water bottle from the car and then held onto it, using the vehicle to help him up a steep climb. The incident was captured on video.
Experts Anders Adamsson and Roberto Vacchi, commenting for HBO Max, said the action looked bad and sent poor signals, though they noted it did not affect the final result. Zimmermann finished 24th in the stage. The stage winner was reportedly Isaac del Toro, who also won the overall Tirreno-Adriatico race, according to SVT Sport, while Expressen Sport reports that Michael Valgren won the stage.
