Construction work on the Magasinsområdet development at Alderholmen in Gävle has resumed after a lengthy pause and several problems, according to local reports. The building machinery returned to the site in November 2025, with the first phase of the project scheduled for completion during 2026. The development aims to create a district where historical elements meet modern design.
Simultaneously, the area will receive a new public artwork called 'Stapelstad' (Stacked City), a seven-meter high structure consisting of six stacked cottages. Each cottage symbolizes an important import or export commodity from Gävle's history as a trading port city. The artwork was created by artist and architect Ulf Mejergren, who designed it to represent the city's role as a gateway to the world.
The bottom cottage of the structure will be functional, serving as a kiosk or coffee shop. The development represents a significant urban renewal project for Gävle, blending cultural heritage with contemporary urban planning.
