Galene Offshore Wind Farm Project Paused Due to Economic and Political Challenges
Key Points
  • The Galene offshore wind farm project 22 km off Varberg has been paused due to lack of economic and political conditions.
  • OX2 Sweden's offshore wind manager Lise Toll cited missing economic prerequisites and political backing as reasons for the pause.
  • Despite having permits and agreements with Hallands Hamnar port, the project cannot proceed with current investment conditions.

The Galene wind farm project planned for the Kattegat, 22 kilometers off the coast of Varberg, Sweden, has been put on hold. According to SVT Halland, the project's pause is due to insufficient conditions for making large energy infrastructure investments at sea.

Lise Toll, responsible for offshore wind at OX2 Sweden, stated that both economic conditions and the necessary political backing are currently lacking. "Just now, both the economic conditions and the political backing that is required are missing," Toll said.

OX2, which develops and sells wind and solar parks, had initially planned to build two connected offshore parks but only received permission for Galene. Despite collaborations with investors and an agreement with Hallands Hamnar to use the port as a service base for boats, the project is now being paused.

The Varbergs tidning newspaper was first to report that the project is being paused. OX2 is a company that specializes in developing and selling renewable energy parks across Sweden.
