Frölunda's chairman Mats Grauers has proposed reducing the number of teams in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) from 14 to 12. He made the suggestion in a TV4 broadcast, arguing that 28 elite teams across SHL and HockeyAllsvenskan is too many for Swedish ice hockey. Grauers reportedly believes this change would improve quality, with two teams moving from SHL to HockeyAllsvenskan and four teams leaving HockeyAllsvenskan for lower divisions.
He cited competition from foreign leagues like the NHL and Swiss league as a reason, saying it could help maintain quality in Swedish hockey. SHL's sports director Johan Hemlin stated that the league is currently reviewing its future direction, with the current system in place until 2030. According to reports, TV4 experts Staffan Kronwall, Joel Lundqvist, and Sanny Lindström support Grauers' idea.
No changes are imminent due to the existing series model.
