Region Värmland is offering a free summer holiday ticket for children and young people born in 2006 or later, valid from June 13 to August 16, 2026, according to the region. The free summer ticket covers travel on Värmlandstrafik's buses and trains throughout the county. The initiative was decided by the political majority comprising the Left Party, Social Democrats, and Centre Party.
Last year's summer ticket resulted in over 533,000 trips, approximately 7,600 trips per day, the region reported. It remains unclear how many will use the ticket in 2026 and what the total cost to the region will be.
In Borås, the municipality is sending a 'Sommarskolkort' (summer school card) to students finishing grades 7-9, adapted or special school (up to grade 10), grades 1-2 of upper secondary school, or grades 1-3 of adapted upper secondary school, according to Borås Stad. The card allows free travel throughout the region and in Kungsbacka municipality, valid 24/7 from June 1 to August 31, 2026.
A heavily discounted summer holiday ticket is available for young people in Hjo, Tibro, and Karlsborg, offering unlimited travel with Västtrafik throughout the region, according to multiple reports. The ticket costs 200 SEK (regular price over 700 SEK) and is valid 24/7 in Västtrafik zones A, B, and C from June 1 to August 31, 2026. Applications are made via Tibro municipality's website, with a deadline of April 15, 2026.
Similar initiatives have been introduced in other Swedish regions to encourage youth travel during the summer months.
