Key Points
  • Four lion cubs born at Dyreparken in Kristiansand on April 29
  • Parents are Mufasa and Kira, both eight years old
  • Lion house closed to minimize disturbances; park monitoring via camera

The cubs' parents are Mufasa and Kira, both aged eight, who arrived at the park in spring 2022 after a recommendation from a conservation program, reports said. Helene Axelsen, a biologist at the park, said: "Kira is an experienced mother who takes good care of her cubs. Everything looks fine with the little ones so far. It is important that the lions get complete peace in the first period, and we are monitoring them via camera."

According to Dyreparken, the lions are part of an international conservation program under the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), which aims to maintain a healthy population of lions in zoos as a reserve for the future. The park also stated that the last lion cubs were born in May 2025, also from Kira and Mufasa. Lionesses typically have between one and six cubs after a gestation period of 3.5 months, and cubs weigh around one or two kilograms at birth and open their eyes after about 11 days, according to the park. The exact number of cubs may not be final, and their genders have not yet been announced. It is unclear when the lion house will reopen to guests.

Kira is an experienced mother who takes good care of her cubs. Everything looks fine with the little ones so far. It is important that the lions get complete peace in the first period, and we are monitoring them via camera.
