Four homicides in one week shake Kotka
Key Points
  • Four homicides occurred in Kotka within one week.
  • A woman was killed in Karhuvuori; a man was arrested.
  • A lawyer was killed in Marinkylä with fire involved; no arrests.

The first suspected murder occurred in the Karhuvuori district, where a woman was found dead in an apartment shared by a writer and his artist spouse. Police arrested a man at the scene after being alerted by an emergency call between Saturday and Sunday night. The victim, originally from Russia, worked as a teacher at a local school and had been married to the writer since spring 2012.

The suspect, a man in his early fifties originally from Savo, has published novels and poetry but works in a technical field. Police have not yet submitted a detention request to the district court, and the cause of death remains undisclosed. A piece of police tape was visible on the apartment door the following Monday morning.

The exact relationship between the suspect and victim has not been confirmed by authorities. On the evening of 15 November, a 60-year-old lawyer was killed in an exceptionally brutal and unusual manner in the Marinkylä area. According to police in Ilta-Sanomat, fire was used in the homicide, and Iltalehti has reported that the investigation has been transferred to the National Bureau of Investigation.

Inspector Kimmo Huhta-aho told media that several people were detained but no one is currently under arrest. He admitted that more than one person may have been involved and that police have a rough idea of what happened, though details remain scarce. In a third incident, authorities say a local man in his mid-60s was stabbed to death in a particularly brutal and cruel manner in a row house in Helilä on Thursday evening.

Emergency services received a call about 10 pm but could not resuscitate the victim. Police arrested two men in their 20s on suspicion of murder; one suspect lived in the same house. A third detainee, aged around 20, was released and is no longer suspected.

The most recent killing occurred on Tuesday in the Karhula area, where one person was killed inside an apartment building. Police arrested one person in connection with the murder, but identities of the victim and suspect have not been disclosed. The spate of violence has left residents shaken, and police have not indicated whether the incidents are connected.

The differing methods and locations suggest separate events, but the investigations are ongoing.
