Key Points
  • Four men arrested in Kenya for murder of Scottish businessman Campbell Scott
  • Scott's body found in a sack of pineapples in Makongo Forest
  • Previous arrests and suspect's death while on the run

Campbell Scott vanished from Nairobi last year, where he had traveled for a work conference. He was a senior director at credit scoring firm FICO and was due to attend a three-day workshop with senior officials from the UK, US and several African countries to discuss markets for new products prior to his disappearance. Scott was reported missing after failing to meet colleagues for a presentation at the JW Marriott Hotel in Nairobi's Westlands area.

Scott is known to have visited the Havana nightclub the evening before his disappearance. He was suspected to have been taken to a property in a slum area known as the Pipeline district, approximately 1.3 miles from his hotel.

Scott's body was discovered by local herders in the Makongo Forest, around 60 miles from Nairobi. A post-mortem examination of his body was inconclusive, with pathologists saying his injuries were too minor to have caused his death, leaving the exact cause of death unclear.

In March last year, two men believed to be among the last to see Campbell Scott alive were arrested. An appeal was launched by officers to find three further suspects after the March arrests, though the current status of those two men and whether they have been charged or convicted remains unknown.

One of the suspects, Samuel Musembi, stabbed himself to death while on the run from police. Musembi initially tried to poison himself before stabbing himself and was in hiding at a friend's house who was unaware of what he had done. He was brought to hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The latest arrests came in an operation at Ideal Apartments in Ukunda. According to Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the suspects were apprehended at that location. The DCI said the suspects have been linked to Campbell Scott's murder and other violent robberies. The suspects have also been forensically linked to another robbery with violence incident in Watamu, Malindi Sub-County.

A search at the suspects' residence led to the recovery of stolen items, including an HP laptop, mobile phones, assorted foreign currencies, multiple credit cards, cheque books from various banks and PDQ machines. The motive behind Campbell Scott's murder has not been established.
