A former finance chief for Region Västerbotten has been sentenced to two years in prison for aggravated bribery, according to Swedish public broadcaster SVT. The man was convicted of taking bribes involving millions of Swedish kronor from the regional government. The crimes occurred between February 2022 and 2024 and were uncovered after a whistleblower alerted authorities.
The former finance chief had responsibility for five billion kronor of Region Västerbotten's pension funds. He was accused of defrauding ten million kronor from the region. During the trial, the man denied the charges, claiming the region was aware of his side work for regional suppliers and knew about the investment arrangements.
