Former Swedish swimming champion Emma Igelström, 45, has announced she will remain in Doha, Qatar, despite recent security tensions in the region. According to reports from Swedish media, Igelström made the difficult decision to stay even as Qatar faces attacks from Iran targeting American military facilities.
Igelström, a four-time world champion who set seven world records during her swimming career, moved to Doha in 2025 to oversee swimming operations for a major school conglomerate in Qatar. In social media posts addressing the situation, she wrote: "Qatar is our home now" and explained that leaving is not a simple decision.
Qatar is our home now
"I am in a position where I cannot just leave," Igelström stated on Instagram, according to Expressen Sport. "Staying in Qatar right now is not a decision we take easily. We are following the situation closely and of course following the advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs."
The former athlete emphasized her responsibilities to her business, employees, and the families affected by her decisions. "Sweden is our homeland and will always be. But at the same time, Qatar is our home right now," she wrote.

Igelström reportedly thanked the Swedish embassy in Doha for their cooperation during the tensions. The situation comes as many Swedes in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates find themselves stranded due to closed airspace following regional conflicts. While many seek to leave, Igelström has chosen to remain, citing her commitment to her work and the community that has welcomed her family.
