David Parrish was discovered in the remote Kintail mountains of the northwest Highlands at approximately 10:25 PM on Saturday. His next of kin have been informed of his death. Parrish was a former Royal Marine and elite athlete.
He was a member of the Dumfries Running Club and was club champion in 2022. Parrish was engaged and had celebrated his stag night before his attempt last week. Parrish was raising money for Scottish Mountain Rescue in honor of his late friend Luke Ireland.
Luke Ireland, a 20-year-old Royal Marine from Monifieth, died from hypothermia while running around Glen Clova in November 2014. Wellwishers have donated more than £25,000 to charity after David Parrish's death. The Cape Wrath Trail is widely regarded as one of the most grueling challenges in the UK, typically taking most walkers around 20 days to complete.
The trail is entirely unmarked, with no official path lines, allowing for route variations. Current trail record holder Pawel Cymbalista took just over three days to cover the 240-mile trail from Fort William to Cape Wrath in 2023. David Parrish had previously dominated the Cape Wrath Trail race in 2023.
Experts are urging tourists to exercise extreme caution on the Cape Wrath Trail due to its hazards. The Cape Wrath Trail is one of the UK's most dangerous routes due to its isolation, terrain, and lack of tourist infrastructure. David Parrish postponed his attempt a couple of weeks ago because of Storm Dave.
The incident has raised questions about safety protocols and the circumstances leading to his death, which remain under investigation.
