Economy & businessEconomy
Key Points
  • FMV has quadrupled its staff in Karlskrona from about 20 to around 80 employees over five years.
  • Increased orders from the Swedish Armed Forces worth approximately 90 billion kronor in 2025 have driven the expansion.
  • Major projects include production of new submarines for the Swedish military, though the timeline has extended due to modern technology requirements.

The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) has significantly expanded its operations in Karlskrona, according to a report from SVT Blekingenytt. Over the past five years, the agency has quadrupled its workforce in the southern Swedish city, growing from approximately 20 employees to around 80 staff members.

Per-Erik Nyström, the local manager for FMV in Karlskrona, stated that increased orders from the Swedish Armed Forces have driven this expansion. "It's busy for everyone here," Nyström said, attributing the growth to "pressure from the Armed Forces, that we get more to order."

One of the major local projects currently underway for FMV is the production of the Swedish Armed Forces' new submarines. Nyström noted that while the project is largely proceeding according to plan, it has taken longer than expected, partly due to the need to incorporate more modern technology.

The value of orders placed by FMV for the Swedish Armed Forces reached approximately 90 billion kronor in 2025, a substantial increase from about 18 billion kronor five years earlier, according to the report.
