Fly-tipping rises in England with local incidents escalating
Key Points
  • Fly-tipping incidents in England increased 9% to 1.25 million in the year ending March 2025.
  • Cambridgeshire had 19,224 illegal dumps with significant enforcement actions including 482 fixed penalties.
  • Major illegal dump at former Felsted station in Essex with long-term problems and council cleanup plans.

In Cambridgeshire, there were 19,224 illegal dumps, including 10,474 incidents in Peterborough alone, where 188 large-scale dumps cost taxpayers £65,800 in clean-up costs. Huntingdonshire recorded 3,560 illegal dumps, while Cambridge had 2,166 fly-tipping incidents. Councils in the county made 9,392 enforcement actions, issuing 482 fixed penalties and collecting £11,669 in fines.

In Essex, fly-tippers have dumped a five-foot wall of rubbish at the former Felsted station, stretching more than 80 meters, according to major media reports. The site at Flitch Way has been subject to illegal fly-tipping for over 10 years, and villagers say it is now worse than ever, with the site for sale at £700,000 and eight homes granted construction permission. Uttlesford District Council will clear and secure the site if it does not sell, or work with new owners to do so within three weeks if it sells, according to a council spokesperson.

Near Peterborough, a large amount of fly-tipped waste was found on land off the A47, close to Sacrewell Farm, with the waste on private land owned by National Highways, who are legally required to remove it. Council officers cordoned off the waste with hazard tape and reported the incident to National Highways. The timeline for National Highways to clear the waste near Sacrewell Farm has not been specified, and it is unknown who is responsible for the fly-tipping incidents in Peterborough and Essex.

Specific enforcement actions against the fly-tippers at these sites have not been detailed.
