The disruption affected airports including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Wellington, Auckland, and Christchurch. Jetstar, Qantas, and Virgin Australia were responsible for the bulk of cancellations, multiple reports said.
Melbourne's Tullamarine airport had 84 flights delayed and 7 cancelled, all by Virgin Australia or Jetstar. Sydney recorded 10 cancellations and 69 delays, while Brisbane had 62 flights delayed. In New Zealand, Auckland had 8 cancellations and 44 delays, and Wellington had 4 cancellations.
The travel disruption is not considered to be caused by the Middle East conflict or rising fuel costs, according to multiple reports. Air New Zealand announced on April 7 that it would reduce flights throughout May and June and increase ticket prices. The carrier was among the first to introduce widespread fare hikes when the Middle East conflict erupted.
