Key Points
  • Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick won the Zurich Classic with a birdie on the last hole.
  • They became the first brothers to win the team event.
  • Matt Fitzpatrick has won three times this season, including back-to-back events.

The Fitzpatrick brothers carded a final-round foursomes score that included a superb 35-yard bunker shot from Matt at the par-five 18th, setting up Alex to hole the winning putt. They began the day with a four-stroke lead but saw it shrink after a double bogey on the 12th hole, where Matt drove behind a tree and Alex's recovery rebounded off another tree. Matt also mis-hit a birdie attempt on the 17th after Alex hit his tee shot to 14 feet, leaving the door open for the chasing pack. Norwegians Kristoffer Reitan and Kris Ventura and American pair Alex Smalley and Hayden Springer finished at 30 under par, one shot back.

Matt Fitzpatrick, ranked number three in the world according to multiple reports, has been in outstanding form. He won the Valspar Championship in March and the RBC Heritage last weekend, becoming the first player in more than two years to win back-to-back events on the PGA Tour. He is also the first Englishman to win three times in the same American season. Reflecting on the final round, Matt said: "It was a struggle. I was doing absolutely zero to help him apart from the putt I made on 15. I wasn't providing much support but he (Alex) was fantastic on the back nine."

It won’t sink in – I’ve got a flight booked for Turkey tonight (as he was scheduled to compete in the Turkish Airlines Open on the DP World Tour). It’s amazing to be here with him (Matt), mum and dad. It’s as good as it gets.

For Alex Fitzpatrick, ranked 141st in the world, the victory provides a major career boost. He earned a PGA Tour card through 2028 with exemptions to the next four Signature Events, next month's US PGA Championship and the 2027 Players Championship. He had been scheduled to compete in the Turkish Airlines Open on the DP World Tour, but the win may alter his plans. "It won't sink in – I've got a flight booked for Turkey tonight," Alex said. "It's amazing to be here with him (Matt), mum and dad. It's as good as it gets." He has until 5pm local time (8pm BST) on Monday to officially join the PGA Tour to be eligible for the Cadillac Championship, a $20 million event starting on Thursday at Trump Doral in Florida.

The Zurich Classic is played over four rounds at TPC Louisiana, alternating between four-ball and foursomes. The Fitzpatricks were six shots behind overnight leaders after carding a 64 in the opening round, then moved one shot off the lead with a seven-under 65 in the second round. Alex Smalley and Hayden Springer led after two rounds at 16 under par. The brothers went 15 under par together in one round, a record in the Zurich Classic. Their final-round score was not immediately confirmed, but the winning total of 31 under par was enough to edge out the tied runners-up.

Obviously playing here as a family has been great for us, not seeing each other that much in the year.
