Fireworks target visiting hockey and football teams
Key Points
  • Fireworks set off outside FC Lahti's hotel in Pietarsaari; most players slept through it.
  • Fireworks outside Rögle's hotel in Skellefteå suspected as revenge for a past incident.
  • AIK supporters set off fireworks outside Modo's hotel; player responded on X.

Fireworks were set off outside FC Lahti's hotel in Pietarsaari on the night between Friday and Saturday, according to multiple reports. The fireworks were intended to disturb the visiting team's sleep. A video of the fireworks was posted on the Instagram account Nordic Hooltras with the caption 'Jaron ultrat ampuvat ilotulitteita Lahden hotellin ulkopuolella'. FC Lahti's performance coach Johannes Jeskanen woke up to the bangs around 3 AM. According to Ilta-Sanomat, Jeskanen described waking up to bangs, going to the window, seeing one flash, then the bangs stopped, and he went back to sleep. He also said that in the morning, the hotel reception told him that football supporters were setting off bangs in the inner courtyard. No major damage was caused by the fireworks, and only a few players woke up; most slept through it. Lahti won the match 1-0 with a goal by Momodou Sarr.

In a separate incident, fireworks were set off outside Rögle's hotel in Skellefteå at 03:07 on the night before the second final. The fireworks lasted up to a minute with several loud bangs. The incident is suspected to be a revenge action for a similar event two years ago when fireworks were set off outside Skellefteå's hotel in Helsingborg. Rögle's coach Dan Tangnes was not woken by the fireworks, but some staff members were. According to Sportbladet, Tangnes described liking when supporters are passionate and try to give their team small advantages, calling it quite innocent as long as nothing is destroyed or anyone gets hurt. According to Sportbladet, Skellefteå forward Pär Lindholm described the incident as making him feel like a superstar, as if about to play a Champions League final.

Around three in the morning I woke up to bangs. I thought for a moment what is happening. Then I went to the window. I saw one flash, then the bangs stopped. I went back to sleep. I didn't get a bigger picture of the situation.

Additionally, AIK supporters set off fireworks outside Modo's hotel on the night before Thursday. Modo's Sebastian Ohlsson responded to the incident in a post on X, though the content of the post has not been disclosed.

The game outcomes varied: Lahti won their match, while the results of the other games have not been reported in connection with these incidents. It remains unclear who was responsible for setting off the fireworks in each incident, whether any arrests were made, or if the fireworks had any impact on the outcomes of the games. Security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future have not been announced.

I asked about the situation at the hotel reception in the morning. They told me that football supporters were setting off some bangs in the inner courtyard.

Johannes Jeskanen, Performance coach of FC Lahti

It's not an ideal situation that even a few players wake up in the middle of the night to anything extra. There was no major harm from the situation.

Johannes Jeskanen, Performance coach of FC Lahti

It made one feel like a superstar, like you were about to play a Champions League final.

Pär Lindholm, Forward for Skellefteå

I like when supporters are passionate and try to give their team small advantages. I think it's quite innocent, as long as you don't destroy anything or anyone gets hurt. We can handle the little distraction.
