A fire that broke out in the laundry room of the United States Navy's massive aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford reportedly took approximately 30 hours to fully contain, according to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. The incident, which occurred last week, destroyed 100 beds on the vessel and led to 200 sailors being checked for smoke inhalation injuries. One sailor was evacuated from the ship due to injuries sustained in the fire.
The material damage from the blaze has reportedly forced some crew members to use makeshift sleeping arrangements. While the actual firefighting operation took a couple of hours, the entire response including follow-up extinguishing and control measures lasted around 30 hours.
According to the U.S. Navy, the fire was not caused by an attack or other hostile activity. The USS Gerald R. Ford plays a key role in U.S. military operations against Iran, according to the report.
