Key Points
  • Finn Kalvik, 78, was honored with a prize, but his friend Øystein Sunde accepted it for him.
  • He was a key figure in Norway's 1970s folk music wave, which blended music with political messages.
  • Kalvik remains relevant with a new album, and the award ceremony is set for March 2026.

Finn Kalvik, a 78-year-old musician, did not have the opportunity to receive the prize himself, so the honor went to his good friend and musician colleague Øystein Sunde. Kalvik was one of the pillars of what was called the great folk music wave that hit Norway in the 1970s. For many, Finn Kalvik and the late Lillebjørn Nilsen are the very faces of a time when a guitar and an honest text were all it took to capture an entire nation.

According to research librarian at the National Library Liv Kreken, the folk music wave was a result of several currents that coincided simultaneously. Kreken explained, 'Previously, the term 'folk song' had been somewhat negatively charged, linked to 'gutter songs' and 'penny songs'. ' When the American counterculture with names like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez reached Norway in the 1970s, the ground was already prepared.

The folk song had become 'respectable', and people were thirsty for something real and close. Artists like Kalvik and Nilsen became big stars but were rare guests on the commercial hit lists. Kreken noted, 'There were few folk songs on the hit lists.

' This was not just entertainment; it was politics. What one sang about varied depending on where in the country one lived. Kreken said, 'In the cities: Here it often dealt with international politics, Chile, and women's struggle.

' When Finn Kalvik now receives his well-deserved honor, it is the combination of message and hard craftsmanship that has made the music survive, according to Kreken. She added, 'Kalvik is an incredibly charismatic artist. He is a skilled guitarist and communicator who gets people to listen.

' Kalvik is currently relevant with a new compilation album called '60 Favorites'. The Spellemannprisen for 2025 will be awarded on March 22, 2026, at the Opera in Oslo.
