Finland and Sweden enjoy record spring warmth
Key Points
  • Finland recorded its highest temperature of the year on Sunday, with Heinola reaching 12.6°C.
  • Sweden enjoyed mild weather but faces a shift to unstable conditions with rain, snow, and wind.
  • Forecasts differ on the timing of warmer weather return and the severity of the setback.

Finland recorded its highest temperature of the year on Sunday, with Heinola reaching 12.6 degrees Celsius, according to major media reports. Monday's temperatures are expected to reach 8-9 degrees in the southeast and Ostrobothnia, around 5 degrees elsewhere, and lower in Lapland. Meteorologist Eevi Silvennoinen of the Finnish Meteorological Institute said that southern and central Finland are almost snow-free, while Lapland still has plenty of snow, although it is decreasing. Nighttime temperatures will drop near zero even in the south, with frost still in Lapland. Light rain is expected Monday afternoon in southern and central Finland, moving eastward by evening, with heavier rain on Tuesday arriving from the west. Wednesday may bring heavier rain, falling as rain in the south and as sleet or snow further north. Gusty winds are expected early in the week, especially strong in Lapland on Monday and still windy on Tuesday. Silvennoinen noted that there are no signs of a return to winter this week or next, with similar weather expected for Easter week. Tuesday's temperatures in Finland may be similar to Monday's, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Sweden has also enjoyed mild weather in recent days, with sun and clouds from Götaland to Norrland on Thursday and Friday, according to major media. Temperatures in southern Sweden reached up to 15 degrees Celsius, while further north they were between 5 and 10 degrees. However, the weather is shifting to a more unstable pattern. Meteorologist Toni Fuentes of TV4 Nyheterna said that Monday is the last reasonably nice day for a while, with unstable weather in the coming days. On Monday, southern Sweden will still have some sun but more clouds than over the weekend, while Norrland will have more clouds and wind, especially in the mountains with a yellow warning for strong wind and snow. From Tuesday, weather becomes grayer across Sweden with increased cloudiness and rain in many places, though not large amounts. Fuentes explained that a high-pressure system in southern Sweden is moving east, and various low pressures are passing over northern Scandinavia, creating strong winds, especially in the north. On Wednesday, there will be a lot of clouds and rain. No clear improvement is seen in the coming days; low pressure after low pressure is expected, with signs of a high-pressure return possibly by the weekend. On Saturday, it will be temporarily cooler in southern Sweden, with snow in Svealand (Dalarna, Värmland, Bergslagen) turning to rain and lots of clouds. On Sunday, fine spring weather returns to large parts of Sweden with sun and temperatures around 10 degrees. However, significant weather setbacks are expected towards the end of next week and the following weekend, with cold air and low pressures bringing possible drama, deep lows, larger precipitation areas, and snowstorms, according to meteorologist Ulrika Elvgren of TV4. Lasse Rydqvist of Klart described the upcoming change as potentially the first setback for spring, noting that temperatures could reach up to 15 degrees in eastern Skåne and along the east coast on Tuesday, but during the second half of the week, several low pressures from the Norwegian Sea will lower temperatures, especially in northern Sweden with possible snow, and in southern Sweden temperatures dropping to 5-6 degrees instead of 14-15. Rydqvist added that these temperature changes are normal for the season, as Sweden is in late winter/early spring and several setbacks are expected. Easter in Sweden will bring really nasty weather; on Sunday the British storm Dave passes with rain and storm gusts, according to major media. Easter Saturday started with snow in several places in Sweden. The weather is shifting from sunny and warm to typical unstable April weather with sleet and northerly winds. Spring warmth is not yet in sight in northeastern Skåne. Forecasts differ on the timing of warmer weather return: some sources say no clear improvement in the coming days, while others expect warmer air by midweek. Similarly, the severity of the setback is described both as typical April weather and as significant weather setbacks.

In northern Sweden, Vattenfall is mapping the spring flood in the Lule River using snow measurements, radar from helicopter, and weather stations. This year's spring flood forecast is slightly below normal, but weather will greatly affect the outcome. The actual weather conditions in the coming weeks will determine how the snowmelt progresses and whether flood risks materialize.
