Film on fertilizer history may secure museum funding
Key Points
  • Film about artificial fertilizer production at Vassmoen aims to secure state funding for Frolands Verk museum
  • Project manager Knut Markhus says state support is needed for museum momentum
  • Birkeland and Eyde's work at Vassmoen led to Norsk Hydro's founding

The film aims to demonstrate the site's national significance. In the early 1900s, Kristian Birkeland and Sam Eyde developed the industrial process for artificial fertilizer at Vassmoen, which led to the founding of Norsk Hydro and a new hydropower-based industry, officials said. Director Kristian Landmark has been brought in to contribute to the film, and filming starts next week, according to officials.

The museum at Frolands Verk began trial operations in the summer of 2025. According to NRK Sørlandet, Markhus said that state financial support is needed for the museum to gain momentum, and to be prioritized by the state, the museum must show something of national interest.
