Fatal punch outside Ebbw Vale pub leads to manslaughter plea
Key Points
  • Kyle O'Callaghan killed Marcus Carpenter with a single punch outside a Wetherspoons pub in Ebbw Vale.
  • Carpenter died in hospital four days later from a hypoxic brain injury, cardiac arrest, and bleeding on the brain.
  • O'Callaghan pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Newport Crown Court on March 27.

The assault took place between 11:30pm on Friday, February 20, and 12:15am on Saturday, February 21, outside The Picture House pub, according to court records. Witnesses described how O'Callaghan, 30, of no fixed abode, punched Carpenter so hard his head snapped backwards, as stated in court. A postmortem revealed Carpenter suffered a hypoxic brain injury, cardiac arrest, and bleeding on the brain, according to prosecutor Martha Smith-Higgins.

" His mother, Francis Price, said he was "cruelly taken away from me," while his partner, Jane Murphy, added: "Stolen my whole world. " His younger brother, Zak Carpenter, wrote on social media: "You will never know how loved you are. " A friend, Lisa Gunter, called him "one of a kind.

" A £10,000 Crimestoppers appeal was offered for information on O'Callaghan's whereabouts. Gwent Police initially arrested a 30-year-old man from Cardiff on suspicion of murder, a police spokesperson confirmed. According to police, O'Callaghan was arrested days later while attempting to climb out of a window.

O'Callaghan pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Newport Crown Court on Friday, March 27, court officials said. " The judge noted that CCTV showed O'Callaghan punched Marcus and caused his death. O'Callaghan had 21 previous convictions, including attacking an ex-partner with a chained dog lead, attacking someone with a glass, and carrying knives in public, according to court documents.

Carpenter was a regular at The Picture House pub, friends said. A fundraising page was launched to help pay for his funeral, and it had raised more than £2,300 at the time of writing, according to the page organizer. The exact motive for the punch remains unclear, and it is not known whether O'Callaghan and Carpenter knew each other before the incident.

The delay between the February incident and the March guilty plea has not been explained, and it is uncertain what specific evidence led to the manslaughter charge rather than murder.
