A detailed plan for a prison on Frösön in Sweden has gained legal force after the Land and Environment Court of Appeal did not grant leave to appeal. The plan for the area around the old Frösön hospital will now take effect. The Swedish Prison and Probation Service began investigating the possibility of establishing a prison there in the summer of 2023.

The following year, Östersund Municipality granted a building permit to the property owner Diös. That permit was stopped by the County Administrative Board, which argued it violated the area's detailed plan. A new detailed plan was developed, and it is this plan that has now gained legal force.

The government has previously approved the prison construction. The property company Diös, which owns the property, will submit a building permit application in April. Diös has sold the property to the property company Stenvalvet.

That purchase will be finalized in the autumn, and Stenvalvet will then become the developer for the prison.
