Sick and dead birds have been lying along the coast of Skillinge in Simrishamn municipality for over two weeks. The cause is bird flu, according to SVT Skåne. Two Canada geese tested by the Swedish National Veterinary Institute on February 23 were found to be infected with bird flu.
A large part of the birds are located between the bathing jetty and the harbor in Skillinge. Simrishamn municipality has visited the coastal strip and states on its website that they will soon take care of the dead birds on municipal land. The municipality advises people not to touch sick or dead birds, to report findings to the Swedish National Veterinary Institute via their web form, to use gloves if handling birds and wash hands thoroughly afterwards, and not to take sick birds to a veterinarian to avoid increasing the risk of spread.
