Extreme cold weather is challenging district heating systems in Uppsala, Sweden. At the Boländerna heating plant, which supplies 90 percent of households in Uppsala, Storvreta, and Knivsta, activity is at full capacity, with three out of four functions of the fuel usage ladder reportedly in operation. An official reportedly stated that if it becomes extremely cold, districts may need to be shut down in turns.
In Örebro, Kumla, and Hallsberg, district heating boilers are running at high pressure due to the cold, with a manager noting it has been many years since it has been this cold for this long. The plant reportedly requires 75 truckloads of biofuel per day when both bio-boilers are running at full capacity.
