The European Union has called for urgent fuel conservation measures as an energy crisis triggered by Iran's blockade of the Hormuz Strait spreads from Asia to Europe. According to reports, Iran blocked the critical shipping channel in response to Israeli and US attacks that began on February 28, halting vital energy deliveries to Asia.
EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen has urged member states to voluntarily reduce energy demand, particularly in the transport sector, with specific calls to save diesel and aviation fuel. The appeal came during an emergency digital meeting of EU energy ministers held on Tuesday afternoon.

"There is no universal solution. But it is obvious that the more we can do to save oil, especially diesel and aviation fuel, the better it is for us," Jørgensen stated at a press conference following the meeting. He warned that the situation could worsen and that reducing demand was "really necessary."
The energy crisis has already prompted drastic measures across Asia. Thailand's government has urged authorities to reduce air conditioning usage to conserve energy, while Sri Lanka has reportedly made Wednesdays a public holiday and introduced fuel rationing, according to BBC reports. Several countries have also encouraged employees to work from home to reduce commuting.

While Sweden currently has no shortage of oil and fuel according to the Energy Agency, officials warn that missed deliveries from the region could impact European markets as early as April. The EU Commission is expected to announce new support measures on Wednesday.
