The deforestation regulation, adopted in 2023, requires companies selling certain goods in the EU to prove their products do not contribute to deforestation and meet traceability requirements. It faced early criticism from industry and member states over extensive administrative demands and difficulties in applying rules to complex global supply chains.
In April 2025, the Commission introduced initial simplification measures, including easier due diligence statements and annual reporting options. In December 2025, the European Parliament and Council postponed implementation to December 30, 2026 for large and medium-sized firms, and to June 30, 2027 for micro and small companies, while also simplifying some rules.
The Swedish government has welcomed changes that reduce administrative burdens and make rules more proportionate. According to officials, the simplification track aligns closely with Sweden's previous positions. The Swedish Forest Industries also welcomed the changes, stating they maintain the regulation's goal of countering global deforestation.
