Nearly five years have passed since the verdict in the Encrochat case, one of the country's largest organized crime investigations, where French police cracked the encrypted app used by criminals to discuss plans openly. The case was among the first where chat logs formed a major part of the evidence. Among the approximately 30 people convicted were the Vårby network's alleged leader Chihab Lamouri and the rappers Yasin and Haval.
The crimes included murder plans against gang leader Maykil Yokhanna, who is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of the then 12-year-old Adriana. The case also involved the kidnapping of rapper Nils 'Einár' Grönberg, and two people were sentenced to prison for murder plans against a criminal leader. The prosecutor is demanding severe penalties.
Lawyers are alleged to have leaked information to criminals.
