Key Points
  • An electricity protest movement has over 1,400 members in Norrbotten, Sweden.
  • The movement plans a demonstration on March 18 in central towns across Norrbotten.
  • Vattenfall says electricity prices are market-driven and they have no direct control.

After several cold months with high electricity bills, residents of Jokkmokk in Norrbotten, Sweden, have started an electricity protest movement. The movement, called Elupproret, currently has over 1,400 members spread across Norrbotten, with the strongest foothold in Jokkmokk. The ambition is to spread the protest and become stronger across the entire county, then together demonstrate on March 18 in Norrbotten's central towns.

The movement has spread to several municipalities, and organizers hope to attract more members in Norrbotten and potentially in Västerbotten as well. In response, the electricity company Vattenfall stated that electricity prices are set by the market and influenced by many factors, noting that prices are determined on a Nordic market and they have no direct influence.
