According to Jönköpings kommun, the bus picks up students at their school and takes them to different natural locations for a full day, from about 8:30 to afternoon. Different areas are used to reduce environmental impact. All municipal schools can participate, but it is unclear whether private schools also have access. The municipality said teachers decide themes beforehand, with common topics including forest, water, and bog ecosystems, though some classes explore specific subjects like birds or biodiversity.
According to Jönköpings kommun, activities involve practical work such as netting in water and examining species. Ulrika Franke said that when students try themselves, more of them want to participate until the whole group gets going. She noted that early in the day, many students become more relaxed and playful. Franke said that for those not used to nature, the experience can be their first close encounter with such environments. The municipality said teachers often discover new sides of students in this outdoor setting. The number of staff operating Ekobussen is not publicly known.
