Eight indicted for stealing 70 motorcycles in organized ring
Key Points
  • Eight indicted for stealing nearly 70 motorcycles and ATVs in organized operation
  • Stolen vehicles worth about five million kronor, transported to Poland
  • Investigation began with GPS tracker leading to farm in Poland

The indictment, announced by the Swedish Prosecution Authority (Åklagarmyndigheten), charges eight individuals with involvement in a large-scale theft ring that targeted motorcycles and ATVs. The stolen vehicles, valued at approximately five million kronor, were taken from 41 separate theft cases across 27 municipalities, primarily in Dalarna and other parts of central Sweden. According to the prosecution, the operation was highly organized, with the stolen goods being transported to Poland for sale or distribution.

The investigation began in Leksand, where a victim had two motorcycles and an ATV stolen, according to police reports. The ATV was equipped with a hidden GPS transmitter. After initial technical problems, the owner obtained positioning data showing the vehicle was in Poland. Through the victim's contacts in Poland, Polish police were quickly involved and tracked the vehicle in real time. The GPS track led to a farm in southern Poland where police seized 20 stolen vehicles. In addition, police seized four cars and a quarter million kronor in cash.

This is a clear example of how technical aids combined with international cooperation can be crucial in an investigation.

Johan Knies, Prosecutor

The scope of the thefts is extensive: the indictment covers 41 theft cases in 27 municipalities, with nearly 70 motorcycles and ATVs stolen, mainly in central Sweden. According to police, 31 vehicles are still missing, though some reports suggest just over 30 remain unaccounted for. The exact number of recovered vehicles remains uncertain, as does the precise count of those still missing.

According to the investigation, there are links to international organized crime. Foreign clients are believed to have directed the operations and hired Swedish perpetrators. Three people are suspected in Poland but are not in custody; suspicions remain. All eight indicted individuals are raised in Sweden and are citizens of Sweden, Finland, and Poland. Fredrik Mattsson of the National Operations Department said, "When we started seeing the patterns, it was clear that it was not about individual thefts, but an organized operation with a clear structure." He added, "It indicates that foreign actors are increasingly using local perpetrators, which places new demands on how we work against this type of crime." Daniel Hagthorpe, head of the preliminary investigation at Mora police, explained, "They place orders with local thieves who steal the motorcycles, which are then exported out of the country."

Police methods included phone analysis, DNA, and secret coercive measures. One of the motorcycles found in Poland was linked to a previous theft in Falun where DNA was secured. By analyzing phone traffic and call lists, police mapped a network of people who had been near several crime scenes across the country. By linking several thefts together, the suspicions rose to the level of aggravated theft, which allowed the use of secret coercive measures. Analysis of suspects' phones showed how stolen motorcycles were hidden in forest areas and later retrieved to be taken out of the country. Hagthorpe noted, "We were then able to request Hawk (secret surveillance of electronic communications), where we can follow individuals via movements of their phones. We then saw, among other things, that 12 of the 20 motorcycles found in Poland could be linked to actors in Sweden."

Six of the eight indicted are detained for aggravated theft. The investigation is one of the largest in the area in recent years, according to swedenherald.com. Investigation teams in Karlskoga, Haninge, and Norrtälje have participated. Prosecutor Johan Knies said, "I have never investigated so many similar thefts."

Police in Sweden and Poland managed to seize the stolen goods, and many vehicles have been returned to their owners in Sweden. The exact number of vehicles returned is not specified, but the recovery effort has been successful in part due to international cooperation. Knies stated, "This is a clear example of how technical aids combined with international cooperation can be crucial in an investigation."

Several uncertainties remain. The exact number of stolen vehicles recovered and still missing is not precisely known, with conflicting reports of 31 versus just over 30 missing. The current status of the three suspects in Poland is unclear, as they are not in custody but suspicions remain. The specific roles each of the eight indicted individuals played have not been detailed. Additionally, it is unknown whether there are links to other similar theft rings in Europe.
