Economy & businessEconomy
Key Points
  • Ed Sheeran's restaurant Bertie Blossoms has £1.3 million in debt, reflecting broader pub struggles.
  • The debt highlights ongoing challenges in the hospitality sector post-pandemic.
  • Reform UK proposes tax cuts to support pubs, but the restaurant's future remains uncertain.

3 million as of December 2024. The balance sheet for the company showed it has gone down by £763,000 since December 2021. During the same period, the business reduced its staff to five, down from six the previous year and 10 in 2020.

Ed Sheeran opened Bertie Blossoms on Portobello Road in West London in September 2019. The restaurant was forced to shut temporarily in 2020 due to the pandemic, but Sheeran refused to furlough his ten staff at the time, instead paying their wages out of his own pocket. In 2023, customers slammed Bertie Blossoms' £19 dishes, complaining they 'taste like second-rate microwave meals'.

Pubs across the UK continue to struggle following the pandemic, with two a day being forced to close. Earlier this month, Reform UK unveiled plans to save the UK's pubs after warning thousands are having to shut their doors. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced his party will reduce VAT to 10% for the hospitality sector if they win the next election.
