Key Points
  • St Patrick statue installed and quickly removed in Dublin
  • Creator plans modifications and potential return of statue
  • Separate dispute over church notices with Dublin City Council

A 12-foot statue of St Patrick holding a pint of Guinness was installed outside the Temple Bar pub in Dublin. The statue was removed within 24 hours of installation. Dublin City Council ordered the removal of the statue after discussions with the property owner.

The statue's creator, Marc Kelly, says the artwork will undergo modifications, including removal of the pint, and could return within a week. Separately, Dublin City Council has banned St Andrew's Westland Row Church from displaying service times on its railings, citing a breach of planning laws. The church has been displaying notices on its railings since the mid-19th century.

There was a request for a few changes, and we decided just it should come down and come back up to us in Monaghan for some light work, and we're going to get him back down to Dublin again then as soon as possible after.

The church has instructed lawyers to find a compromise with Dublin City Council.

Just some changes to make to it. And obviously the pint was covered and that, so we were just in discussions with the clients and that. So they requested that we make an adjustment to that design element, which won't, hopefully take too long, so we'll get it back and people getting it photographed again as soon as possible.
