According to the DVLA, the renewal is a legal requirement, not optional, and applies to anyone currently aged 70 or above, or those approaching their 70th birthday within the next 90 days. The regulations cover drivers residing in Great Britain, with a different system operating in Northern Ireland.
The most straightforward renewal method is online, which is free and allows updating the photograph during the process. Applications submitted online typically result in the new licence arriving within a week. To apply online, you need an email address, addresses for the last three years, National Insurance number (if known), and a valid UK passport number if updating your photo. After submitting, the DVLA sends confirmation by email and may ask for a voluntary survey. However, the online service is unavailable if the licence has been revoked, refused on medical grounds, or if the driver is currently disqualified. Additionally, those holding C1 or D1 entitlements must submit postal applications.
For postal applications, the DVLA automatically dispatches a D46P form 90 days prior to the 70th birthday. Forms for C1 and D1 licences need to be requested separately. While the application is being processed, the driver may continue driving provided they hold a valid licence, have medical clearance, adhere to existing licence conditions, and have not been disqualified since June 2013. The DVLA states that periodic renewals for older motorists are fundamentally about safety, ensuring vision and medical conditions meet required standards.
