Dog owner reports vet after missed diagnosis leads to eye removal
Key Points
  • Dog owner Helle Løvetofte reported veterinarian Lukasz Chromy after her dog Daisy's eye removal surgery.
  • Chromy has faced eight prior criticisms from the Responsibility Board for Animal Health and Veterinary Care.
  • Investigations are ongoing into the case and Chromy's veterinary license.

Helle Løvetofte sought care from veterinarian Lukasz Chromy for her family dog Daisy's eye pain in autumn 2024, not knowing at the time that Chromy had been criticized eight times by the Responsibility Board for Animal Health and Veterinary Care. The board's criticisms include missing life-threatening diabetes and performing two unnecessary cruciate ligament operations. At Chromy's clinic in Malmö, Daisy was diagnosed with eye inflammation, medicated, and had her nictitating membrane scraped.

After the treatment, the dog's pain worsened, and Løvetofte eventually sought care for the bloody eyes from a specialist in Denmark. According to the Danish veterinarian, Chromy missed a large corneal ulcer, which led to Daisy having to have one of her eyes surgically removed. Chromy claims he examined Daisy's corneas and that the ulcer occurred after the visit to him.

I thought we are in Sweden and he has a license, says Helle Løvetofte who today regrets that she sought care from veterinarian Lukasz Chromy when the family dog Daisy had eye pain in autumn 2024.

Løvetofte has reported the case to the Responsibility Board, and the matter is still under preparation. An investigation is ongoing into whether Chromy should retain his veterinary license.

I think that he absolutely should not have a license, says Helle Løvetofte.

When we got there, the veterinarian asked who had mutilated my dog in this way, that was her first reaction.

I always think first about the cornea and that should be ruled out before moving on to other things, he says.
