Key Points
  • Five dead bulls were found at a meat production farm in Jämtland during an animal welfare inspection.
  • The inspection revealed a lack of bedding, frozen manure-covered floors, and frozen water containers affecting the animals.
  • The County Administrative Board has issued demands for improved care and will conduct a follow-up inspection.

After a report of inadequate animal husbandry, the County Administrative Board in Jämtland, Sweden, conducted an inspection at a meat production farm in the county in February. During the inspection, five dead bulls were found lying on the ground. According to the records, the five bulls had died without measures being taken by the animal owner.

An additional bull was found in such poor condition that it could not stand up, and the animal was later euthanized. The County Administrative Board's protocol shows that there was a complete lack of bedding for the animals in the calf sheds and lying halls. Additionally, the floors in all animal spaces were covered with a thick layer of frozen manure, which hindered the animals' ability to move.

Some animals also lacked access to water because the water containers had frozen. The County Administrative Board is now making demands on the animal owner on several points, including that the animals must be checked every day, receive care when needed, and always have access to water. The stalls must also be kept clean and provided with sufficient bedding so the animals can lie dry.

The County Administrative Board will follow up the case with a new inspection. Currently, the authority does not want to comment further on the case as it is still under processing.
