Key Points
  • Ditch plugs installed at Målö ängar to restore wetland
  • Restoration reduces climate impact and boosts biodiversity
  • Part of larger development plan with housing, school, business area

The restoration is part of a larger development plan that includes future housing, a school, and a business area, but the wetland work is focused on land that will remain natural. The area was drained long ago for agriculture, and officials say restoring wetlands helps retain carbon stored in peat soil, which otherwise releases greenhouse gases when drained. Ditch plugging involves blocking ditches with natural materials to raise the water level, reducing oxygen in the soil and stopping peat decomposition.

According to Jönköpings kommun, forest manager Joakim Frick described the land as having been drained for agriculture, with the goal of restoring natural water levels and the wetland's former values. The plugs help retain water, evening out flows during heavy rain and creating better habitats. Water handler Jesper Villaume told the kommun that extensive planning is needed, including determining the number and placement of plugs and their impact on surrounding forest.

This is land that was drained a long time ago to be used for agriculture. Now we want to restore the natural water levels and recreate the values that the wetland once had.

The goal is to keep the water level just below the ground surface for maximum environmental benefit. The plugs are designed to function long-term and blend naturally into the environment, and the restoration is expected to lead to richer animal life in the future.
