A one-year pilot project in Malmö, Sweden, measured total water consumption in two apartment buildings. Using a digital water meter, consumption decreased by nine percent in 2025 compared to 2023. The project was run by the municipally owned company Sydvatten and Stena fastigheter.
Tenants in 37 apartments had a digital water meter installed and received advice and tips on how to save water in daily life. The digital water meter is installed in the shower and shows the water's temperature, how long someone has showered, and how many liters of water are consumed in real time. Sydvatten has a strategic goal to reduce drinking water consumption by two percent per year until 2040.
