Representative John Larson of Connecticut has filed 13 articles of impeachment against Trump for high crimes and misdemeanors. Larson's articles accuse the president of serial usurpation of the congressional war power and commission of murder, war crimes and piracy with attacks in Iran, Venezuela, and elsewhere. They also allege Trump illegally militarized law enforcement and surged immigration officers into U.S. cities to unlawfully detain and deport people based on race, ethnicity, or political opposition.
Larson's impeachment proposal was drafted by consumer advocate Ralph Nader and constitutional law scholar Bruce Fein. According to Fein, Trump's war on Iran is flagrantly unconstitutional and a criminal war of aggression. This week, Trump demanded Iran agree to a deal with the United States to end the war by Tuesday evening, or else he would destroy Iran's power plants and bridges, a demand that included reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump's attack on Iran in partnership with Israel was not in self-defense. It is a criminal war of aggression, plain and simple, including a violation of the United Nations Charter.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle dismissed Larson's impeachment proposal as pathetic. Ingle described Democrats as having talked about impeaching Trump since before he was sworn into office and called Democrats in Congress deranged, weak, and ineffective.
Separately, Representative Yassamin Ansari filed impeachment articles against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Ansari's proposal accuses Hegseth of repeatedly violating his oath of office and his duty to the Constitution. It also alleges reckless endangerment of U.S. servicemembers and repeated war crimes, including bombing a girls' school in Minab, Iran and willfully targeting civilian infrastructure.
Democrats have been talking about impeaching President Trump since before he was even sworn into office. The Democrats in Congress are deranged, weak, and ineffective, which is why their approval ratings are at historic lows.
More people are turning against Trump, including many known as his staunch supporters. The group of Democratic leaders demanding Trump's removal from office grew after Trump made threats this week to destroy Iran's whole civilization. Over 50 leaders, mostly from the House of Representatives, are involved, including Representatives Rashida Tlaib, Eric Swalwell, and Senator Ed Markey. Democratic leaders describe Trump as completely insane in a statement.
Democratic leaders demand the House of Representatives convene immediately and vote to end the war in Iran. Democrats are also demanding Trump's removal from office under the 25th Amendment or by other means. It remains unclear whether the House will actually convene and vote on ending the war or impeaching Trump and Hegseth. The exact number of Democratic members calling for Trump's removal is also uncertain, with sources reporting nearly 100 and over 50, but it's unclear if these are overlapping or distinct counts. The specific evidence for allegations of war crimes, such as bombing the girls' school, has not been detailed, and it is unknown whether Trump's threats to destroy Iran's civilization or infrastructure have been acted upon or are still pending. The current status of the Strait of Hormuz—whether it has been reopened or remains closed—is also not confirmed.
