Democratic members of Congress have filed articles of impeachment against Donald Trump, with nearly 100 congressional Democrats calling for his removal over threats to Iran. Rep. John Larson of Connecticut filed 13 articles of impeachment against Trump for high crimes and misdemeanors. The articles accuse Trump of serial usurpation of congressional war power and commission of murder, war crimes, and piracy with attacks in Iran, Venezuela, and international waters. They also allege he illegally militarized law enforcement and surged immigration officers into U.S. cities to unlawfully detain and deport people based on race, ethnicity, or political opposition. The impeachment proposal against Trump was drafted by consumer advocate Ralph Nader and constitutional law scholar Bruce Fein. Fein called Trump's war on Iran flagrantly unconstitutional and a criminal war of aggression. This week, Trump demanded Iran agree to a deal with the United States to end the war by Tuesday evening, or else he would destroy Iran's power plants and bridges. His demand included reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Separately, Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari has filed articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The impeachment articles against Hegseth accuse him of repeatedly violating his oath of office and his duty to the Constitution. They also allege reckless endangerment of U.S. servicemembers and repeated war crimes, including bombing a girls' school in Minab, Iran and willfully targeting civilian infrastructure.
The group of Democratic officials demanding Trump's removal from office grew after Trump threatened this week to destroy Iran's whole civilization. Over 50 officials, mostly from the House of Representatives, are demanding Trump's removal, including Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Eric Swalwell and Senator Ed Markey. Democrats demand Trump be removed from office under the 25th Amendment or by other means.
Democrats have been talking about impeaching President Trump since before he was even sworn into office. The Democrats in Congress are deranged, weak, and ineffective, which is why their approval ratings are at historic lows.
Democratic leaders describe Trump as completely insane in a statement. They demand the House of Representatives be convened immediately to vote on ending the war in Iran.
House Democrats on Tuesday proposed creating a commission that would work with JD Vance to remove Donald Trump from office under the 25th Amendment, should they determine he is no longer fit to serve. The measure was introduced by Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the House judiciary committee. Fifty other Democratic House lawmakers have co-sponsored the bill. The bill faces long odds in the Republican-controlled chamber.
The measure would create the Commission on Presidential Capacity to Discharge the Powers and Duties of Office, composed of four retired executive branch office holders chosen by Congress's Republican and Democratic leaders. Congress's leaders would also select four physicians and four psychiatrists to serve on the body, whose members would choose a 17th person to act as their chair.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle called Larson's impeachment proposal pathetic. Whether the impeachment articles against Trump or Hegseth will advance in Congress remains uncertain. The current status of Trump's deadline and threats against Iran, including if any military action has occurred, is also unclear.
