Dead fish found in Uppsala pond, oxygen deficiency suspected
Key Points
  • At least 40-50 dead fish found in Uppsala pond
  • Likely cause is oxygen deficiency, but not confirmed without sampling
  • Follows record low water levels in Baltic Sea last winter

According to Uppsala Nya Tidning, Leo Folkesson described seeing at least 40-50 dead fish in the pond, which is connected to the Håga River. The dead fish included perch, roach, and large pike. Eddie Leãn Sjöblom, a veterinarian at SVA, said the likely cause is oxygen deficiency in the water.

However, he noted that a definitive cause cannot be determined without sampling. The incident comes after last winter's record low water levels in the Baltic Sea, which caused oxygen deficiency for fish in several locations in the county, including Ekholmsnässjön, the inlet at eastern Lagnö and Ingarö, and Gisslingö outside Norrtälje. Henrik Schreiber stated that the pike population will be affected in the coming years but is expected to recover within a few years.

There were loads of dead fish in the pond.
