Danish Foreign Minister Warns Greenland Crisis Not Over, Campaigns for Stronger EU Ahead of Election
Key Points
  • Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen warns the Greenland crisis is not over and is campaigning for a stronger EU ahead of Tuesday's election.
  • Rasmussen's Moderaterne party appears poised to play a kingmaker role in forming Denmark's next government despite having only around six percent support.
  • The foreign minister argues that centrist parties thinking holistically would better serve Denmark's interests than those focused on immigration or taxing the wealthy.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has warned that the Greenland crisis is not over, according to multiple Swedish media reports. Rasmussen, who also leads the Moderaterne party, is campaigning to gather power in the political center and strengthen the European Union ahead of Tuesday's Danish election. 'I usually say that you cannot be a winning nation in a losing region,' Rasmussen told Swedish news agency TT.

The foreign minister, who became internationally known as 'the smoking Dane' after a historic meeting about Greenland at the White House earlier this year, appears set to become a kingmaker following the election. Despite leading a smaller party with around six percent support, Rasmussen could play a decisive role in forming the next government. He argues that a centrist government would better serve Denmark's interests and could more effectively advocate for a stronger EU, which he says is needed more than ever due to geopolitical tensions.
