Vänersborg's Dalbobron Bridge Undergoing Major Repairs After Emergency Closure

Key Points
  • Dalbobron bridge in Vänersborg was emergency closed in September due to defective concrete in foundation supports.
  • Repairs are proceeding in stages, allowing partial vehicle access while buses and heavy traffic use detours.
  • The bridge is expected to be fully operational by midsummer 2026, according to project officials.

The Dalbobron bridge in Vänersborg, Sweden, remains partially closed as extensive repairs continue following an emergency closure in September. According to SVT Väst, the bridge was shut down after inspections revealed defective concrete in the foundation supports, with the 200-ton bridge pillars resting on compromised concrete undergirdings.

Christian Johansson, production manager at T3, described the condition of the concrete as "like drilling in butter," indicating severe deterioration. The municipality reportedly had knowledge of damage to the undergirdings since 2013, and a failed procurement process prevented planned renovations from occurring.

Repair work is now proceeding in stages, with four undergirdings being removed and rebuilt at a time. This approach allows the bridge to remain open for passenger vehicles in two of four lanes while repairs continue. Buses and heavy traffic must continue using detours around the city.

Johansson expressed confidence that the bridge will be fully operational by midsummer 2026, noting that favorable winter conditions have facilitated the construction work. The poor concrete quality has had one practical advantage during removal - the porous material can be washed away with high-pressure water in just two to three hours, significantly faster than typical concrete removal.
