Key Points
  • Costs for Dalarna's ambulance helicopter are rising sharply, with an 18% increase expected in 2026.
  • Factors include fuel, wages, inflation, technical problems, and weather challenges.
  • The service remains vital, having helped thousands of patients and being central to healthcare in the region.

The cost of the ambulance helicopter in Mora for Region Dalarna is expected to increase by 18 percent in 2026, with the annual price tag now approaching 58 million kronor. The cost has nearly doubled since its introduction ten years ago. Increased costs for fuel, wages, and inflation are some of the factors that have contributed to the price increase.

The ten years have been marked by technical problems, weather challenges, and increasing expenses. The Swedish Air Ambulance was formed in 2014 and is responsible for operating ambulance helicopter services for its members, which are the four regions of Värmland, Dalarna, Västerbotten, and Norrbotten. The helicopters within the Swedish Air Ambulance operate from four bases located in Karlstad, Mora, Lycksele, and Gällivare.

The Christian Democrats were against the decision to operate the ambulance helicopter in-house; they wanted to procure a private company to handle the job. A Christian Democrat politician expressed a preference for a different form of airborne care. The debate about the costs continues.

The operation has helped thousands of patients with advanced care and fast transport since its introduction. Today, the ambulance helicopter is a central part of healthcare in Dalarna. A politician stated that the service is worth the cost and noted improved economic control during the current mandate period.
